Er is in tussentijd heel wat gebeurt dat zijn repercuties heeft naar ons decor toe. Zoals je kan zien op ons inderhaast getekende plannetje, had mijn aquarium een asverschuiving van 25 cm na 2 meter. En dit om mij toegang te verschaffen naar mijn radiator. Verleden week vertelde Eric echter dat hij geen aquarium met asverschuiving kende dat het niet na 7 jaar begaf. En, ook de mensen waarmee hij gesproken had, zagen het idee niet goed zitten.
In the meantime, a lot has happened what has its repercutionsto our background. As you can see on our hastily drafted plan, my aquarium existed out of two partsof which one part started (and ended) 25 cm before the other (sorry, I didn't find the translation of: asverschuiving). And, this to enable me to still reach my radiator. Last week Eric told me that didn't know any aquarium, that was built like that, and still lasted longer than 7 years. And, also the people that he talked to, didn't like the idea.
Zodoende moesten we de bak herdenken. En, we besloten om er een rechthoekig bak van te maken van 290x70x80 (wh: 70 cm) = 1400 liter. Door deze verkorting van 30 cm, is het echter niet langer een ideale bak om er een goepje Astronotus ocellatus in te houden. Te meer omdat ik voor volgend jaar een bak gepland heb van 350-320x70x80 cm. Daarmee valt de Astronotus en ook het daarbij horende decor.
So, we had to re-think my tank. And, we decided to make a rectangular tank out of it, of 290x70x80 (wh: 70 cm) = 1400 litres. However, after this reduction of 30 cm, it is no longer an ideal tank to keep een group of Astronotus ocellatus, if you consider the fact that I have planned for next year an additional tank of 350-320x70x80. Knowing this, the main-inhabitant (the Astronotus ocellatus) falls and also the background for him.
Oplossing: het visbestand van volgend jaar naar deze bak vertalen en ook het thema van het decor. Het zal dus geen Riverbank-decor worden maar een Mangrove-decor. Het probleem van het visbestand voor volgend jaar, was dat er nog geen visbestand voor bestond. Het enige wat ik met zekerheid weet is dat de hoofdbewoner van de bak, oorspronkelijk gepland voor volgend jaar, de Uaru amphiacanthoides is.
Solution: we take the fish, we had chosen for next year, and also the theme of the background. So, we won't build a Riverbank-background but a Mangrove-background. The only problem with the fish for next year is that I hadn't seriously looked in the matter. The only thing I know, is that I would like to have the Uaru amphiacanthoides as main inhabiter.

De Planning voor het Decor / The Plan for a Background.
Hoewel ik niet van plan was om het in deze blog te hebben over de aanmaak van het decor voor deze bak - per slot van rekening, ik heb een blog gewijd aan het maken van aquarium-decors - vertelt de realiteit me dat, als ik het hier niet doe, er waarschijnlijk weinig van in huis gaat komen. Ik had me voorgenomen om, in de blog over aquarium-decors, eerst over het Tanganyika-decors te hebben en pas daarna dit decor aan te snijden. Maar, door het aanhoudende slechte weer en het werk dat ik heb aan m'n andere blogs, is de aanmaak van dit decor verschoven in de tijd en sta ik nog nergens wat betreft het publiceren van m'n foto-archief over m'n Tanganyika-decor. De keuze dringt zich dus op. Ofwel schrijf ik hier over de aanmaak van het decor voor deze bak, ofwel stel ik het uit, maar dan wel voor een lange tijd. Ik heb voor het eerste gekozen.
Although I wasn't planning to talk about the construction of the background for this tank - after all, I have a blog concerning the construction of backgrounds for aquaria - the reality tells me that if I don't do it here, not very much will come of it. I had the intention, in the blog concerning the construction of backgrounds of aquaria, to talk firstly about the background of my Tanganyika-tank and after that to talk about the background for this tank. However, through the persistent bad weather and the work that I have with my other blogs, the construction of the background for this tank has been set much earlier than expected and I still am nowhere, regarding the publishing of my photo-archive (1000 pictures) of my Tanganyika-tank. So, it's time to make a choice. Or I write here about the construction of the background for this tank, or I postpone it but then for a longer period. I've decided for the first option.
Oké, we (Tim en ik) hebben besloten om een riverbank aquarium te maken voor deze bak. Dus, het decor zal erg duister worden, plantenloos en we gaan proberen het een erg vuile look mee te geven. De verlichting van dit aquarium zal door LED-lampjes gebeuren om op die manier de enkele zonnestralen na te bootsen die erin slagen om door het dichte bladerdak het water te bereiken. De kleuren van het decor zullen het duistere aspect gestalte doen geven. De vuile look zullen we trachten te benaderen door organisch materiaal (mulch, turf, ...) in het decor op te nemen. Er komen erg veel zelfgemaakte stenen in het decor om schuilplaatsen te creeren. Daarenboven zullen we met PVC-buizen, koorden, etc, een heus wortelstelsel proberen te creeren. Het is enorm veel werk om het te maken, maar daar zijn Tim en ik nog nooit voor teruggeschrokken.

The lightening for this aquarium will happen by LED-lightening to simulate the few sunbeams that are capable to penetrate the roof of leaves above it and still reach the water. The colours of the bachground will take care of the dark aspect of this background. We'll try to simulate the dirty look by adding a lot of organic material (mulch, peed, ...) to the decor. There will be a lot of selfmade rocks in order to create hiding spots. And, we'll try to create by using PVC-piping, ropes, etc, a genuine root-system. This means, a lot of work. But, Tim and I have never been afraid of working...
